Every device in your home is talking. Your smart TV, your phone, your thermostat, your printer — and yes, your router — are all quietly sending data back to manufacturers, advertisers, and data brokers. This happens around the clock, whether you are using the device or not. They call it "telemetry." We call it what it is: surveillance.
This guide will show you how to stop it — or at least make them work a lot harder for it — at every level from beginner to homelab veteran.
⚠ Security Advisory :: Amazon eero WiFi System
The eero is a well-reviewed mesh networking product. It is also one of the most prolific data-collection devices you can plug into your home network. Amazon — who acquired eero in 2019 — has built a business model around knowing what you buy, what you watch, what you search, and now, what devices are on your network and when you use them.
The eero does not just phone home. It calls constantly. Device inventory, usage patterns, traffic metadata, and more are transmitted back to Amazon's servers on a continuous basis. Amazon openly states in its privacy policy that it may share this data with third-party partners. In plain English: they sell it.

Add
encrypted DNS for more coverage — NextDNS or ControlD let you block known tracking domains and encrypt queries so your ISP cannot log or sell your activity.

Point your router's DNS to a filtering service. Every device on your network gets covered automatically.
DD-WRT open-source firmware gives you full router-level control: custom DNS, firewall rules, per-device filtering, and complete traffic visibility. The Buffalo WZR-600DHP runs DD-WRT exceptionally well.
⚠ Devices with hardcoded DNS (8.8.8.8) can bypass router-level filtering.
Pi-hole — Runs on a Raspberry Pi. Acts as your network's DNS server, blocking bad domains before any connection is made. Free, open source, real-time dashboard.
AdGuard Home — Modern Pi-hole alternative. Cleaner interface, built-in encrypted DNS, handles DNS and DHCP. Runs on Pi, spare PC, NAS, or VM.
⚠ DoH-enabled devices can bypass DNS filtering entirely.
AdGuard Home on a VM with 12+ blocklists will block
25–30% of ALL DNS traffic on a typical home network. Most of it is telemetry you never knew existed.
Combine with firewall-level IP blocking (MikroTik, pfSense, OPNsense), hardcoded DNS interception, DoH blocking, and
IoT VLAN isolation for maximum effect.

Document metadata, ink levels, usage statistics — and ink subscription enforcement.
Game Consoles
Gameplay data, friend lists, session length, purchasing behavior.
Baby Monitors
Many phone home to overseas servers with no user awareness or consent.
Roku Devices
Ad tracking, ACR data, and Nielsen measurement on every session.
Smart Speakers
All major brands — Alexa, Google, Siri — continuous ambient monitoring.
Everything above stops new telemetry from leaving your network. It does nothing about data that's already been collected and published by people-search and data broker sites — Spokeo, WhitePages, BeenVerified, MyLife, and dozens more. These sites collect and sell your name, address, phone numbers, and relatives, usually without you ever agreeing to it. This section covers how to find what's out there and get it removed using real legal leverage.
⚠ Know Your Rights First
Most states now have a consumer data protection law requiring data controllers to honor deletion requests within a set window — commonly 45 days. Check your own state's law and cite the correct one before sending anything.
